Summary The house mouse (Mus musculus) is a small mammal of the order Rodentia. The species has benefited significantly from associating with human habitation, and in most areas house mice cannot survive away from human settlements.

Despite its small size the mouse is amongst the closest non-primate relatives of humans, and is thus used extensively in biological studies pertaining to human health. The house mouse has been used in biomedical research since the 17th Century, and is the most commonly used mammalian research model in genetics, psychology, medicine and other scientific disciplines. The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Maine is one of the world's largest suppliers of laboratory mice.

The house mouse genome, which was completely sequenced in 2002, was the second mammalian genome to be sequenced after humans. This Pathway/Genome Database (PGDB) was generated by the Bult lab of the Jackson Laboratory from the annotated genome using the Pathway Tools software [Karp10] and MetaCyc version 13.0 as a reference database [Caspi08]. The database was improved by limited manual curation by the Bult lab. The database integrates the biochemical reaction networks and metabolic pathways with the mouse genome.

Development of this PGDB was supported by NIH NHGRI grant HG003622.
